Which categories this genuinely works for
Try-on quality depends on how the product physically relates to the body. Anything that sits rigidly on a trackable landmark works well; anything that drapes, stretches or depends on fit does not.

Why jewellery and eyewear are the sweet spot
Both sit on stable facial or wrist landmarks that a camera tracks accurately. Glasses attach to the bridge of the nose and the ears; earrings hang from a fixed point; a necklace follows the neckline.
They are also categories where the customer's question is exactly the one try-on answers. Nobody wonders whether a pair of spectacles will fit — they wonder whether it suits their face. That is a visual question and the render answers it honestly.
Jewellery adds a further advantage in the Indian market: high-value purchases where the customer wants family opinion before committing. A try-on image shared in a WhatsApp group is how that decision actually gets made, and it carries your branding into a conversation you would otherwise be absent from.
Making the render believable
The difference between a try-on customers trust and one they dismiss comes down to a handful of details.
- Correct scale. Sizing against face width or wrist width, so a large frame looks large. Everything at one default size reads as fake instantly.
- Occlusion. Hair falling in front of an earring, a nose bridge partly hiding a frame arm. Products that float above the person never look real.
- Lighting match. Reflections and shadows consistent with the customer's actual light, which matters enormously for metal and stones.
- Stable tracking. Jitter as the head moves is the single most common quality complaint.
- True colour. Especially for cosmetics, where the shade on screen must relate closely to the shade in the tube.
Product assets, which is where the work sits
Each product needs a prepared 3D asset or a carefully processed set of images with materials defined. Metal, stone, matte plastic and transparent lens all behave differently under light and have to be described to the renderer.
Budget roughly two to six hours per SKU for asset preparation, which for a 500-piece jewellery catalogue is a substantial project on its own. Most clients start with a curated hundred bestsellers rather than the full range.

Placing it where customers decide
In the browser, on the product page, with no app download. A try-on that requires installing something loses most of its audience at the first step, and the browser is capable enough for this on any recent phone.
In a retail store on a tablet or mirror display, it works differently but often better — staff-guided, on a large screen, with the customer able to compare six frames in two minutes rather than trying them physically one at a time.
And the output should be saveable and shareable by default. The image that leaves your site is doing marketing work that the session itself does not.
Measuring it properly
Try-on is easy to justify with impressions and hard to justify with numbers unless you set up the measurement in advance.
Compare sessions that used try-on against those that did not, on conversion, order value and — the one most often forgotten — return rate. For eyewear and jewellery, the return reduction is frequently the larger financial effect, because a customer who has seen the product on their own face is much less likely to send it back.
Run it as a split rather than a before-and-after, and give it a full quarter. Novelty inflates the first month's usage and tells you nothing durable.

Does it work on cheap Android phones?
Mostly, with adjustments. Face tracking runs acceptably on mid-range devices from the last four or five years. What suffers on weaker hardware is render quality and frame rate, so we ship a reduced-quality path that lowers resolution and simplifies lighting rather than failing outright. Devices that cannot support it at all fall back to a static composite image, which is less impressive but still answers the customer's question.
How accurate is the colour for cosmetics?
Close, but never exact, and the interface must say so. Phone screens differ, ambient light shifts perception, and skin tone interacts with the product in ways a render approximates. What try-on does reliably is help a customer choose between shades — this one is warmer than that one — which is the actual decision they are making. Presenting it as an exact colour match invites complaints you will not win.
Can customers try on multiple items at once?
For compatible categories, yes, and it is worth building. A necklace with matching earrings, or spectacles with a particular hairstyle, reflects how people actually buy. Where it gets complicated is products competing for the same landmark — two necklaces, or a watch and a bangle on the same wrist — which needs explicit layering rules. We define those per category during the build rather than leaving it to the renderer.
What about photo mode versus live camera?
Offer both. Live camera is more engaging and better for comparing options quickly. Photo mode — upload or capture once, then try items on the still image — is more forgiving of poor lighting and weak hardware, produces a cleaner image for sharing, and is what customers actually use when they want to send something to a family member. Photo mode also costs less to run per session, which matters at volume.
Do we need 3D models of every product?
For eyewear and jewellery, yes, in practice — the products need to be rendered from arbitrary angles under varying light, which flat images cannot support convincingly. Cosmetics are the exception and work from colour and finish parameters alone, making that category much cheaper to launch. This asset requirement is the main reason we recommend starting with a curated selection and expanding based on which products customers actually try on.
