Instagram & Facebook DM Automation

An Instagram and Facebook DM bot replies to direct messages and comments automatically, answers product and price questions, and moves anyone with buying intent into WhatsApp or your CRM before they lose interest. It is built for brands whose ad spend is leaking through an unanswered inbox.

Who it's for

D2C brands and creators running paid social.

What changes

Ad spend stops leaking through unanswered DMs.

Key takeaways

  • Most paid-social leakage happens in the DM inbox, not on the landing page.
  • Comment-to-DM automation turns public engagement into a private conversation you can measure.
  • Meta's 24-hour messaging window applies here too — after it closes you need an approved tag to reply.
  • Instagram automation requires a Professional or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page.
  • Builds in 2–4 weeks from ₹45,000. Wrong fit if you are not running paid social.

Where paid social actually leaks

Brands audit their creative, their targeting and their landing page. Almost nobody audits the inbox. Yet on Instagram the natural response to an ad is not a click — it is a DM asking "price?", or a comment asking whether you deliver to Nashik.

Those messages arrive at every hour, in volume, and in the same inbox as spam, compliments and people asking for collaborations. A brand spending ₹50,000 a month on ads and answering DMs twice a day is losing a meaningful share of what it paid for, and the loss is invisible because an unanswered DM never appears in the ads dashboard.

Comment-to-DM: the mechanic that does most of the work

The highest-value automation on Instagram is not the reply itself. It is converting a public comment into a private conversation.

Someone comments "price?" under a reel. The bot replies publicly with something short and human, then sends them a DM with the actual answer, the product link and a question that moves things forward. You get three things from that: the commenter becomes a contactable lead, the public comment gets a visible response which helps the post, and the conversation moves somewhere you can measure.

Trigger words are yours to define — price, cost, link, DM me, available, size. We keep the public reply varied rather than identical, because forty identical comment replies under one reel looks exactly like what it is.

What the bot can and cannot do on each platform

Instagram and Facebook messaging are the same underlying API but with meaningfully different constraints, and suppliers who gloss over this end up promising things that get rejected.

The 24-hour rule catches people out. Once a customer messages you, there is a window in which you can reply freely. After it closes, an unprompted follow-up needs a Meta-approved tag with a legitimate reason — an order update, for instance. Promotional follow-ups outside the window are not permitted and attempting them puts the account at risk.

Handing over to WhatsApp

For most Indian brands, Instagram is where the interest starts and WhatsApp is where the sale happens. The DM bot's job is often to qualify lightly and pass the conversation across with a click-to-WhatsApp link carrying a reference so the WhatsApp agent knows what was already discussed.

This is the single most useful integration in the whole setup, and it is also where the attribution finally becomes visible — you can see which reel produced the DM that produced the WhatsApp conversation that produced the order.

What it needs from you

Setup is lighter than WhatsApp Business API but not nothing. You need an Instagram Professional or Creator account connected to a Facebook Page, admin access to that Page, and a Meta app connected to both. Personal Instagram accounts cannot be automated at all, which is the most common blocker for creators.

You also need a real product and price list. A DM bot that cannot answer "how much" is a chatbot performing customer service theatre.

When this is the wrong project

If you are not running paid social and your DM volume is a handful a week, do not build this. Answer them yourself — the personal reply from a small brand is an asset, not a cost.

It becomes worth it when volume is high enough that DMs go unanswered for hours, or when you are spending money on ads that route into the inbox. Below roughly a hundred DMs a month, the maths does not work.

What ships at the end of the build

A connected agent handling DMs and comments on both platforms, trigger words you can edit, varied public replies, human routing for anything sensitive, click-to-WhatsApp handover with attribution, opt-out handling, and a dashboard showing DM volume, response time and how many conversations reached a human.

FAQ

Instagram & Facebook DM Bot — your questions

Will Instagram ban my account for automating DMs?

Not if it is built on the official Messenger API for Instagram, which is what we use. Bans come from unofficial tools that automate the app itself, or from ignoring the 24-hour window and opt-outs. We build inside Meta's rules, which also means saying no when a client asks for something the platform does not allow.

Can it reply to story replies and mentions?

Story replies, yes — they arrive as DMs and are handled like any other message, and they are often the warmest lead you get. Story mentions can be detected and acknowledged. Comments on a post are handled separately through the comment-to-DM flow.

Can I use my personal Instagram account?

No. Automation requires a Professional or Creator account linked to a Facebook Page. Switching is free and takes about a minute in Instagram settings, and it also unlocks the insights you will want for measuring whether this worked.

How is this different from the WhatsApp chatbot?

Different channel, different economics and different job. Instagram DMs are top-of-funnel and mostly reactive to content and ads; WhatsApp is where the considered conversation happens. Meta bills WhatsApp conversations but not Instagram DMs, so this is cheaper to run — and most brands eventually want both, with a handover between them.
